Toolbox talks are the most practical way to meet those requirements. California (Cal/OSHA) goes further, requiring supervisors to conduct toolbox talks at least every 10 working days.

This ensures all crew members receive the same information and that your documentation covers the full crew.

Fall protection is required by OSHA for any work at heights of 6 feet or more in construction (29 CFR 1926.502). This includes guardrails, safety nets, and personal fall arrest systems (harnesses). Falls are the #1 cause of construction fatalities, accounting for roughly one-third of all construction deaths each year. Training on proper fall protection use and inspection is required before any worker is exposed to fall hazards.

Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) is the procedure for isolating hazardous energy — electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, or mechanical — before performing maintenance or service on equipment. OSHA 29 CFR 1926.95 requires employers to assess the workplace for hazards and provide appropriate PPE at no cost to the employee. OSHA's Respirable Crystalline Silica standard (29 CFR 1926.1153) requires construction employers to limit worker exposure to silica dust — generated by cutting, grinding, or drilling concrete, brick, or stone. Requirements include: using wet methods or local exhaust ventilation when cutting, providing respirators when exposure limits are exceeded, and training workers on silica hazards and controls.

An Emergency Action Plan (EAP) is a written plan that defines procedures for responding to emergencies — fires, explosions, chemical spills, medical emergencies, and severe weather.
